Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

By: Melissa Figueroa

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed between September 15 – October 15, and NW Plus CU had the opportunity to sponsor two events this month to celebrate with our community.

On Thursday September 12, we were at the Opera House in Marysville where we enjoyed the Hispanic Heritage Month event hosted by The Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber. The afternoon started with a proclamation read by the Mayor to declare Sept 15 - Oct 15 Hispanic Heritage month in the City of Marysville, followed by multiple cultural performances including Aztec dancers, mariachi, and folklorico dancers. This was NW Plus' 3rd year sponsoring this event and we enjoyed spending the afternoon with our Marysville community!

On Friday September 13, we had the pleasure of being at El Grito, an event hosted by Skagit Valley College. El Grito is a tradition to celebrate Mexico's independence and this year featured a resource fair, vendors selling food and artisan products, a DJ, live music, and folklorico dancers. This event had a great turnout even with the rain, and we got to connected with so many people! 2024 is our first year sponsoring this event, and it was a night to remember.

Each evening gave us the opportunity to shine a spotlight on one of our incredible members, Jose ‘Neaners’ Garcia, and the non-profit he owns and operates, Hope for Homies. You can check out the video we shared below to hear his story.

The NW Plus team that staffed these events had an amazing time engaging with our local Hispanic community. We are truly grateful to everyone who made these evenings possible!
